Implant-Support Dentures

Implant DenturesFailing to replace missing teeth can cause several problems ranging from difficulty speaking and eating to bone loss and movement of surrounding teeth. If you are looking to replace several missing teeth, either on the top or bottom of the mouth, our dentists, Drs. Noles, Estes, and Steinhauer at Noles Family Dental in Greensburg, Indiana may recommend implant dentures.

Implant Dentures Combine Traditional Dentures With Dental Implants

Previously, only two options were available to you when you needed to replace multiple missing teeth: traditional dentures or dental implants. That was until implant dentures were created.

As the name suggests, implant dentures combine traditional dentures and dental implants into a single treatment option. With implant dentures, an overdenture that is similar to a traditional denture is used to replace your missing teeth. However, instead of resting on top of the gums and being supported with gels or other adhesives, an implant denture is held securely in place by several dental implants.

The number of dental implants used to support the dentures will vary depending upon how many teeth are being replaced and your unique situation. Our dentists, Drs. Noles, Estes, and Steinhauer recommend a minimum of two dental implants, but most implant dentures require between four and six.

Benefits of Implant Dentures

Our patients at Noles Family Dental choose implant dentures for a number of reasons. Some of the most common reasons people choose to replace their missing teeth with implant dentures include:

  • Extra support and stability prevent dentures from slipping and sliding when you are wearing them.
  • This dental restoration is often more expensive than traditional dentures but less than replacing every missing tooth with a dental implant.
  • No need to have to use messy glues and adhesives
  • No having to remove dentures to clean them. Implant dentures can be brushed just like your natural teeth.
  • Fewer food restrictions
  • Prevents bone loss
  • Looks and functions just like your natural teeth

Who Is a Good Candidate for Implant Dentures

To be a good candidate for implant dentures, you need to have enough bone mass to properly support a dental implant. As part of your dental restoration consultation, our dentist takes X-rays and other imaging to help determine your bone density. If our dentist is concerned there isn’t enough bone to support an implant, a bone graft procedure may be recommended.

Your teeth and gums also need to be healthy to be a good candidate for implant dentures. Our dentist will assess your oral health and determine if your gums and teeth are healthy enough to proceed with this type of dental restoration.

Should any dental issues be noticed, we can create a treatment plan that addresses any issues that may be preventing you from getting implant dentures. With proper treatment, the health of your teeth and gums may improve enough that you are a good candidate for implant dentures.
