Oral Surgery FAQ

Oral surgery can sound intimidating, but many procedures are more routine than patients expect. Whether you need a tooth extraction, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, or dental implant placement, the team at Noles Family Dental is committed to making your experience as comfortable as possible. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear about oral surgery.

When is the best time to get my wisdom teeth removed?

In many cases, wisdom teeth are easiest to remove during the late teen years or early twenties, before the roots are fully developed. However, there is no single “perfect” age. Our dentists will evaluate your teeth, jaw, and symptoms to determine the right timing for treatment.

How long will the holes in my jaw stay after extractions?

The gum tissue typically closes within a few weeks, but the underlying bone takes longer to fill in. Depending on the size of the extraction site, complete healing may take several months. Keeping the area clean and following post-operative instructions can support proper healing.

Will I have swelling after my appointment?

Some swelling is a normal part of the healing process, especially after surgical extractions or wisdom tooth removal. Swelling is usually most noticeable during the first two to three days and gradually improves afterward. Applying ice packs as directed can help minimize discomfort.

I had surgery this morning, and my stitches came out already. Is this okay?

Often, yes. Many oral surgery procedures use dissolvable stitches that can loosen or fall out as healing begins. However, if you experience excessive bleeding, pain, or concerns about the surgical site, contact our office so we can evaluate the area.

What is bone grafting, and will I need it for my extraction?

Bone grafting is a procedure that helps preserve or rebuild bone in the jaw after a tooth is removed. Not every extraction requires a bone graft. We may recommend one if you are considering a future dental implant or if there is significant bone loss in the area.

What is a dry socket?

A dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot at an extraction site becomes dislodged or fails to form properly. This can expose the underlying bone and nerves, causing significant discomfort. Following your post-operative instructions carefully can help reduce the risk.

Will getting a dental implant hurt?

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable dental implant placement is. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and many patients report less discomfort afterward than they expected. Any soreness that follows is typically manageable with recommended medications and home care.
